A votação para a premiação, cujos vencedores são escolhidos pelos fãs, é aberta – os fãs podem votar em todas as categorias AMA no TikTok pesquisando por “AMAs” no aplicativo. O evento acontecerá ao vivo no Microsoft Theatre em Los Angeles no domingo, 21 de novembro, às 20h na ABC e serão transmitidos no dia seguinte no Hulu.
Rodrigo faz sua estreia no AMA com sete indicações, incluindo Artista do Ano e Artista Revelação do Ano. Cinco vezes vencedor do AMA, The Weeknd, recebeu seis indicações, incluindo Artista do Ano, bem como Videoclipe e Canção Pop Favorita. Outros indicados como Artista do Ano incluem Ariana Grande, BTS, Drake e Taylor Swift.
As novas categorias deste ano são Canção de tendência favorita, com nomeados de TikTok nas canções mais virais do ano, Artista gospel favorito e Duo ou grupo latino favorito, que completa a expansão das categorias latinas no ano passado, elevando o total para cinco no gênero.
Os nomeados são baseados nas principais interações dos fãs – conforme refletido nas paradas da Billboard – incluindo streaming, vendas de álbuns, vendas de músicas e airplay de rádio. Essas medições são rastreadas pela Billboard e seu parceiro de dados MRC Data e cobrem o período de 25 de setembro de 2020 até 23 de setembro de 2021. Os vencedores do American Music Awards são votados inteiramente pelos fãs.
